I got a call from ALFRED HILSBERG (of the ‘WHAT’S SO FUNNY ABOUT RECORD LABEL in Hamburg) and MARC CHUNG (of EINSTURZENDE NEUBAUTEN) – (Marc having just set up ‘FRIEBANK PUBLISHING IN HAMBURG) asking me if I would produce two guys from MUNICH who called themselves WASCH!, I listened to the demo tape, liked it and said I would do it. The studio (RHEINKLANG in Düsseldorf) was booked and the boys arrived. For the first couple of days all went well, then I started to notice a rather odd sort of vibe coming from the guys. Now about this time the partnership between PETER KRICK & BODO STIEGER had started to unravel, so I had to deal with both this and the Grumpy Bavarians. I was and am pretty direct, and confronted the guys, who said that the album was not sounding like their demo! Now you often get this with new young bands who do not have much studio experience, so I basically said, ‘well, you know, if you want it like that you can carry on and do it the way you like’ Hilsberg or Marc intervened and I carried on. The real problem was that I was approaching things from a kind of ‘INDUSTRIAL TECHNO DISCO’ angle, Techno did not exist then but it soon would and would blast out of Germany, change the world and burn up the dance floor! And in fact shortly after this I created and produced the first big ‘INDUSTRIAL-TECHNO-TRANCE-ROCK- ANTHEM’-RADIOACTIVITY for M.E.L.T..
The WASH! Album ‘MOUNTAIN GOES METAL’ was released got great reviews, the band almost got signed to a major deal in the USA but shot themselves in the foot! The boys still hated the album and consequently re-mixed it, and it sounds dreadful, thin, badly arranged and badly produced! If you can get hold of the ORIGINAL RELEASE on WHAT'S SO FUNNY ABOUT and the original 12” of COCAIN, also on WSFA, with my production on the credits of all tracks together with PETER or BODO then you will hear a magnificent and incredibly powerful album and a taste of what this band could have been if they could have put their egos away in their Lederhosen!

So this has been a musical history spread over thirty years, it has I must say been quite journey for me, revisiting both good and not so good memories. I have obviously been selective about what is featured here, some things I would like to have included are not featured as I know longer have the tracks/masters or indeed know where they are. However perhaps other things will turn up and can be included at a later date. Looking back on me, in those days, hmmmm! I'm not sure! Certainly a very different person (one hopes) to the one I am today! And probably more convinced about myself than I should have been! Anyway, I hope this 'history lesson' is interesting and entertaining, it certainly has been for me!
